The Power of Forgiveness by Naomi Drew M.A.

Give Yourself Up by Rev. Kim K. Crawford Harvie, Arlington Street Church, November 13, 2005

Desmond Tutu said, “To forgive is not just to be altruistic. It is the best form of self-interest. It is also a process that does not exclude hatred and anger. These emotions are all part of being human. You should never hate yourself for hating others who do terrible things: the depth of your love is shown by the extent of your anger."

"However, when I talk of forgiveness, I mean the belief that you can come out the other side a better person, a better person than the one being consumed by anger and hatred. Remaining in that state locks you in a state of victimhood, making you almost dependent on the perpetrator. If you can find it in yourself to forgive, then you are no longer chained to the perpetrator.”

Two stories in the news: one tragic, one delightful

Five Found Dead in Related Shootings, October 26, 2005
I'm wondering what the rest of the story will be. This may be one of those cases where a quiet estrangement would have been preferable.

But on a different note, a happy story that isn't brand new but is new to me as a dear online friend shared it with me today. This story had its beginnings around Christmastime in 2004:

Results of search on Technorati for keywords Christmas and estranged ...

Here are the results of this Technorati search today. I did a search using the keywords Christmas and estranged. After I selected ten, Technorati pooped out on me so couldn't look at more right now. But this is sufficient. The results relate to all kinds of estrangements: with parents, husbands, sisters, friends and some are just peripherally about estrangement.

Wishing you a peaceful holiday,

Solid citizen, father, engineer, and crack smoking bank robber!

63-year-old bank robber raised his sons right. So they turned him in. By Ted Gregory, Tribune staff reporter. Published November 18, 2005

One more of those stories that fascinate me. The kind where the downright upright solid citizen has a secret side that almost no one knows about and one day his sons wake up and discover that their father is a philandering crack smoking bank robber! At least two of them stop talking to him ... after they turn him in.

Some links that come up when searching on keywords: "estranged from my mother":

Estranged from my mother: Ask Amy Anything Advice Column August 6, 2004

Severed, Like a Tree from Its Roots by  Lillian Boraks-Nemetz A quote from the article: " Then there is a different sort of separation -- a rending of children from parents, a bizarre example of what was done during the era of Nazi persecution when parents gave their children to strangers so that they might survive."

The links below are all from a blog called Real Joe. To navigate to the next post from the one linked to, you just click on the next subject in the blog which will be the one to the right of the word "Main".

I haven't seen many blogs written so sensitively by a man who wasn't by profession a writer. Oops! I checked out his "About Us" info and he is very much a writer! I bumped into Real Joe today in my search for some interesting links on estrangements.

Two Father/Son Estrangement Links

1. Talent, determination and Hamburger Helper: He has big year despite estrangement from his father by Ron Kroichick, Chronicle Staff Writer Sunday, September 18, 2005
From online article: "Farmington, Pa. -- Sean O'Hair spent the past two years as a thrifty golfing nomad, bouncing among obscure mini-tour events. He and his wife, Jackie, kept hot plates in the back of their Ford F-150 truck..."

2. Review of C.R.A.Z.Y., a film released in Canada in October 2005 on a father/son estrangement.
From the review: "C.R.A.Z.Y.  is a highly likeable and richly nuanced comedy-drama about growing up gay in an ordinary suburban Quebec family in the 60s and 70s. Though the story places the painful estrangement of father and son at the centre, writer/director  Jean-Marc Vallée  takes time and care to make all the characters well-rounded individuals with lives going on outside the main plotline."

Blog Fishing: Today's Catch, Nov. 1, 2005

I go to and then put in key words that relate to estrangement. Then I see what comes up, check the blogs it found, and if there is anything interesting, I collect the link and put it here with sometimes a little quote from the post to give an indication of what the post or the blog is about. This is my second Blog Fishing Expedition.

10 Blog Fish:

How does one become un-estranged?  "I've felt increasingly like it is time to talk to my father again, but as time passes

In this case, it's a middle aged English professor dealing with office politics during a period of budget cuts, an enlarged prostate (which happens to be a metaphor for both his stress level and his issues with his estranged, albiet academically famous, father)..."

Edgar Allen Poe He was my favorite author when I was a teenager. This is a blog about famous people and this post is about Poe. He was estranged from his adopted father.
